Oil on Paper 23x30"
My work and contemporary process is the by-product of my life experiences. The work is dependent upon the immediacy of the moment describing mood and self-perception. As a result the work that I am creating is the outcome of my subconscious. Female portraits and abstract works have been the focus of my artistic practice for many years. My primary mediums have consisted of acrylics, oils, mixed media, and encaustic wax.
October of 2012 I attended the Soi Fisher Thematic Residency Program at Artscape on Toronto Island. In Toronto the focal point for my series was the literary works of Edgar Allen Poe. The intent of the project was to pay homage to Poe’s prose. This project aims to reflect the horror that Poe evoked in his written works. To transform Poe’s literary work into a visual interpretation required delving into the evocative and haunting world of his writing style. I strove to expand my own psychological limits through this new project. The intent is for the viewer to experience the same extension of psyche that I did.
My artwork is a product of my emotions, and as an outcome the final pieces that I created in Toronto morphed and diversified. The artwork is a collection of abstracts and haunting portraitures, the final result merges into a collaborative series. The abstract work is but the mark left by a hand in a narrative of horror and violence. The powerful story is told with a few non-representative strokes, which like many of the pieces, is dominated by black shapes. The portraitures leave you with a feeling of a person rising through the paint, emerging from below. There's something surprising, magical even, about how the broad strokes can depict a specific face and evoke something of the subject's personality or mood (as well as those of the artist).
